wrath of the assassins

In our special 100th episode, we take a narrative historical journey alongside the group that gave us the word “assassin”.

A Medieval sect of Shia Islam, the Nizari emerged from their mountain home in Persia to become a spiritual, political, and military force in the Levant. Outnumbered by more powerful neighbors, such as the Egyptian Sultan Saladin and the Christian Crusaders, the Nizari employed stealthy tactics to strike fear into the hearts of their foes.

Stemming from the Arabic for “those who are faithful”, the word “assassin” was popularized in Europe by the writings of Marco Polo (who never actually met them).

This episode is a work of historical fiction, which we have made in honor of all our listeners - thank you!
