The leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, a group that fought for the independence of Ukraine from Polish and Soviet rule, Bandera collaborated with Nazi Germany during the Second World War.

His name and legacy remain a matter of great importance and enormous controversy to this day in Ukraine — especially during this time of war in that country. Some consider him to be a national hero, whose fight for Ukrainian freedom should be celebrated. But others believe he was a cruel fascist and a pawn in Hitler’s genocidal war against the Soviet Union.
